Seattle working to bring NBA back (AP)

The city of Seattle has been working behind the scenes the past eight months with a hedge-fund manager to bring an NBA team back to town — possibly as early as next fall if the Sacramento Kings fail to get a satisfactory deal for a new arena, newly released documents show. The city turned over the documents to The Seattle Times on Friday under a public records request (http://is.gd/PyQ06N ).

Hornets to sign F Thomas to 10-day deal (AP)

New Orleans general manager Dell Demps says the Hornets plan to sign forward Lance Thomas to a 10-day contract on Monday. The move comes as forward Carl Landry recovers from a left knee injury that occurred during the Hornets’ loss at Detroit on Saturday night. Landry posted on his Twitter account on Sunday that he has a sprained medial collateral ligament.

James scores 30 as Heat hold off Raptors (AP)

LeBron James scored 30 points, Dwyane Wade had 25 and the Miami Heat survived a shaky fourth quarter to beat the Toronto Raptors 95-89 on Sunday afternoon. Chris Bosh scored 12 points against his former team, which saw a 15-point edge trimmed to three in the final minutes but never surrendered the lead.

Garnett helps Celts roll past Grizzlies (AP)

Kevin Garnett matched his season-high with 24 points and grabbed nine rebounds to lead the Boston Celtics to their fourth straight win, 98-80 over the Memphis Grizzlies on Sunday. Paul Pierce scored 21 points, moving nine behind Hall of Famer Larry Bird for second place on the club’s all-time list, and Ray Allen added 12.

Batum hits 9 3s as Blazers beat Nuggets (AP)

Nicolas Batum woke up hoping his injured knee would allow him to play. As it happened, he set a Trail Blazers record with nine 3-pointers and scored a career-high 33 points to help Portland beat the Denver Nuggets 117-97 Saturday night. “When I came in tonight I was thinking, `Don’t hurt my knee, don’t be crazy tonight,”‘ said Batum, who sat out two games with a bruised bone.

Jazz hand Lakers another road loss (AP)

Riding adrenaline and some modern treatment on his sprained ankle, Earl Watson took a close game and broke it open for Utah. He keyed a clinching 14-0 fourth quarter run to help the Jazz beat the Los Angeles Lakers 96-87 Saturday night. “You don’t really notice because you are lost in the game,” Watson said.

Deng has 21 in return, Bulls top Bucks (AP)

Derrick Rose knows how important Luol Deng is to the Chicago Bulls. Rose scored 26 points and had 13 assists and Deng added 21 points in his return after missing seven games due to injury, as the Chicago Bulls easily beat the Milwaukee Bucks 113-90 Saturday night. “He makes the game easy,” Rose said of his teammate.

Lin’s career-high 25 get Knicks by Nets (AP)

Jeremy Lin cut through the Nets’ defense all night before he was finally surrounded. As teammates hugged him at center court while Pearl Jam’s “Jeremy” blasted through the arena, it was clear the New York Knicks had finally found a spark. And even the Harvard-educated Lin struggled to explain how it ended up being him.

Howard leads Magic to third straight win (AP)

Shut out of a hotel by the Super Bowl, the Orlando Magic had to fly in from Cincinnati on Saturday before the game. It didn’t produce much in the way of attractive basketball, though the Magic could have done worse. Their ugly win could have been an ugly loss. Dwight Howard had 27 points and eight rebounds to lead the Orlando Magic to an 85-81 win over the Indiana Pacers on Saturday night.

Sixers avoid back-to-back losses again (AP)

The Sixers are making the NBA’s lockout-induced compressed schedule a vehicle to show off their superior depth and resiliency. Playing without Elton Brand and facing one of the Eastern Conference’s top five teams for the second straight night, Philadelphia had double figures from each of its four bench players to overwhelm the Atlanta Hawks 98-87 Saturday night.

Pistons’ Knight breaks nose vs. Hornets (AP)

Brandon Knight broke his nose in the first quarter of the Detroit Pistons’ game against the New Orleans Hornets on Saturday night. The rookie point guard, who had a career-high 26 points in Friday’s win over Milwaukee, sustained the injury midway through the first quarter. While going for an offensive rebound, he was hit by teammate Greg Monroe’s elbow.

76ers’ Brand out with sprained thumb (AP)

Philadelphia forward Elton Brand is inactive for Saturday night’s game against the Atlanta Hawks with a sprained right thumb. Brand got his thumb caught in a jersey in Friday night’s loss to Miami in Philadelphia. Rookie Lavoy Allen of Temple will make his first career start as the replacement for Brand.

Hawks C Collins to miss 2 weeks (AP)

The Atlanta Hawks say reserve center Jason Collins will miss the next two weeks with a sprained left elbow. Collins, the primary backup to Zaza Pachulia with All-Star center Al Horford sidelined the next three months, was injured in Thursday’s home loss to Memphis. Collins, an 11-year NBA veteran, has started 31 of 81 career games in three seasons with Atlanta.

Boston stayed close enough until the New York Knicks failed again. This time, it was because of the Celtics’ defense. Paul Pierce scored 30 points and Ray Allen had nine of his 14 in the final quarter to lift the Celtics to a 91-89 win over the struggling Knicks on Friday night. George has 30, Pacers end skid in Dallas (AP)

Paul George hit seven 3-pointers and finished with a career-high 30 points, and the Indiana Pacers won in Dallas for the first time in eight years, beating the Mavericks 98-87 Friday night. The Pacers took the lead for good with seven consecutive points in the first 2 minutes of the second half. George made a go-ahead running layup then had a steal that he turned into a dunk and a free throw.

Reserves lead Rockets past Suns 99-81 (AP)

Kevin Martin scored 16 points, Kyle Lowry had eight rebounds and nine assists and the Houston Rockets beat the Phoenix Suns 99-81 on Friday night. Chase Budinger added 12 points and 10 rebounds for the Rockets, who got another strong effort from their reserves to beat the Suns for only the second time in the last nine meetings.
