Brad Penny to pitch in Japan in 2012 (AP)

The Softbank Hawks of Japan’s Pacific League have signed former major league pitcher Brad Penny to a one-year contract. Softbank announced the signing of free agent Penny on its website Sunday The 33-year-old right-hander is expected to arrive in Japan on Wednesday. Financial terms of the deal were not released.

Yankees GM Cashman’s wife wants divorce (AP)

The wife of Yankees general manager Brian Cashman has filed divorce papers, a day after prosecutors charged a woman with stalking him and extorting money over an extramarital affair. Mary Cashman filed the paperwork Friday in Stamford, Conn. Her lawyer didn’t immediately return a phone message Saturday.

Dodgers ink RHP Coffey for 1 year, $1.3M (AP)

The Los Angeles Dodgers have agreed to terms with right-handed reliever Todd Coffey on a $1.3 million, one-year contract with a club option for 2013. The deal, announced Friday, will pay Coffey $1 million this season. The Dodgers hold a $2.5 million option for next season with a $300,000 buyout. Coffey was 5-1 with a 3.62 ERA in 69 games with Washington last season.

Dodgers ask court to disallow Stow claim (AP)

The Los Angeles Dodgers asked a U.S. Bankruptcy Judge on Friday to disallow claims against the team filed by Bryan Stow, the San Francisco Giants fan nearly beaten to death outside Dodger Stadium last spring. Stow and his family sued the Dodgers in California state court, then filed the claim with the federal court in July, weeks after owner Frank McCourt put the team in bankruptcy.

Yanks’ Chamberlain throws off half-mound (AP)

New York Yankees reliever Joba Chamberlain has started throwing off a half-mound as part of a rehabilitation program after elbow ligament replacement surgery. Chamberlain threw at the Yankees’ minor league complex in Florida on Friday. The right-hander said the session on the 5-inch mound, which New York pitching coach Larry Rothschild and team vice president Billy Connors watched, went well.

Cox to manage Braves prospects in warmup (AP)

Bobby Cox is returning to the dugout — but only for one exhibition. The former Braves manager will be back in uniform to manage the organization’s top prospects against the current major leaguers on April 3. The game will be played at the home of the Braves’ Triple-A Gwinnett team near Atlanta.

Marcum, Brewers settle at $7.725M (AP)

Pitcher Shaun Marcum and the Milwaukee Brewers have agreed to a one-year contract worth $7,725,000, just ahead of the scheduled start of their salary arbitration hearing. Friday’s deal was at the midpoint between the $8.7 million and $6.75 million figures filed by the sides when they exchanged proposed arbitration salaries last month.

Hamilton calls relapse ‘weak moment’ (AP)

Texas Rangers outfielder and recovering drug addict Josh Hamilton said Friday that he had a relapse and had “three or four” drinks earlier this week at a Dallas-area bar, calling it a “weak moment” that he will take specific steps to make sure doesn’t happen again. Belisle, Rockies add ‘13, $4.35M to deal (AP)

Reliever Matt Belisle and the Colorado Rockies have agreed to a two-year contract that includes a mutual option for 2014 and adds an additional $4.35 million. The right-hander had agreed last February to a deal that pays him $3,775,000 this year and allows him to earn an additional $225,000 in bonuses based on games finished.

Cubs, RHP Garza agree to 1-year, $9.5M (AP)

Right-hander Matt Garza has agreed to a $9.5 million, one-year contract with the Chicago Cubs, just before the scheduled start of a salary arbitration hearing in St. Petersburg, Fla. Friday’s agreement was $725,000 below the midpoint between the $12.5 million the pitcher had asked for in arbitration last month and $7.95 million the Cubs had offered.

Hamilton to speak after relapse report (AP)

Texas Rangers outfielder and recovering drug addict Josh Hamilton scheduled a news conference for Friday amid reports that he had a relapse this week when he drank alcohol at a Dallas-area bar. The team did not disclose the reason for the 1 p.m. CST news conference, but it comes less than 12 hours after The Dallas Morning News reported that Hamilton was drinking at the bar on Monday.

Garza’s AL championship ring stolen (AP)

Sheriff’s detectives say that an American League Championship ring belonging to Chicago Cubs pitcher Matt Garza has been stolen from his California home. The Fresno Bee reports (http://bit.ly/xnXGSo) that the ring — valued at $30,000 — was taken during a burglary of Garza’s home in Fresno County sometime between Jan.

Report: Hamilton had alcohol relapse (AP)

The Dallas Morning News is reporting Rangers outfielder and recovering drug addict Josh Hamilton had a relapse earlier this week when he drank alcohol at a bar. The newspaper, citing unidentified “individuals familiar with the episode,” reported Thursday night that Hamilton was at a Dallas area bar Monday.

Woman charged with extorting Cashman (AP)

A woman has been charged with stalking and shaking down New York Yankees general manager Brian Cashman. Louise Neathway is being arraigned Thursday night in a Manhattan court. Prosecutors say she extorted $6,000 from Cashman, tried to squeeze $15,000 more and engaged in “a long-term effort to control and manipulate” him.

Indians agree to terms with 1B Kotchman (AP)

After exploring other options and coming up empty this winter, the Cleveland Indians may have finally found their new first baseman: Casey Kotchman. The team agreed to terms Thursday night on a one-year, $3 million contract with Kotchman, a free agent, two people familiar with the negotiations told the Associated Press.

Dodgers, White Sox to play benefit game (AP)

The Los Angeles Dodgers and Chicago White Sox will play a spring training game in Tucson, Ariz., on March 23 to benefit the Christina-Taylor Green Foundation. The game will be played at Kino Veterans Memorial Stadium with all proceeds going to the foundation named for the daughter of Dodgers scout John Green.

Dodgers’ bidders to meet with management (AP)

Remaining bidders for the Dodgers are being invited to meetings with the team’s management in Los Angeles. A person familiar with one of the group’s plans said its meeting had been scheduled for next week and the group will have the opportunity to ask questions and further investigate finances as it prepares for the second round of bidding.

Braves’ Hanson says shoulder feels good (AP)

Braves right-hander Tommy Hanson says his right shoulder is feeling good and he expects to be on a regular routine for the start of spring training. Hanson enjoyed a strong first half of the 2011 season. He made only five starts after the All-Star break due to persistent pain in the shoulder. A small tear was found in his right rotator cuff that did not require surgery.

Nationals, Edwin Jackson agree to deal (AP)

Pitcher Edwin Jackson agreed Thursday to a one-year contract with the Washington Nationals. The team said the agreement is pending a physical. The deal is worth in the range of $9 million to $12 million. A 28-year-old right-hander, Jackson was 12-9 with a 3.79 ERA last season for the Chicago White Sox and World Series champion St.
