Delmon Young had two hits, including the go-ahead single in the seventh, to lift the Minnesota Twins to a 4-3 victory over the Detroit Tigers on Tuesday night. Young’s big hit came after Tigers reliever Phil Coke (7-4) hit two batters to load the bases and Ryan Perry walked in the tying run. Rangers acquire OF Francoeur from Mets (AP)

The first-place Texas Rangers have acquired outfielder Jeff Francoeur for their playoff push. The New York Mets sent Francoeur and cash to Texas for infielder Joaquin Arias, who was designated for assignment last week when Alex Cora was called up by the Rangers. The strong-armed Francoeur is hitting .237 with 11 homers and 54 RBIs.

Bautista homers during Jays’ 10-run 6th (AP)

Jose Bautista hit his major league-leading 43rd homer during a 10-run sixth inning and the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Tampa Bay Rays 13-5 on Tuesday night. Tampa Bay lost for only the fifth time in 17 games but fell a game behind the first-place New York Yankees in the AL East. The Rays and Yankees, who beat Oakland 9-3, had been tied atop the division for the previous eight days.

Merriman might not play in season opener (AP)

Chargers outside linebacker Shawne Merriman won’t play in Thursday night’s exhibition finale at San Francisco due to an Achilles’ tendon injury, and there’s no guarantee he’ll play in the season opener Sept. 13 at Kansas City. Merriman knows the team is better served with him fully healthy than playing with a hindrance, so he’s not going to just jump back into the lineup.

Seahawks LB Hill takes major pay cut (AP)

Linebacker Leroy Hill is taking a major pay cut to play for the Seattle Seahawks in 2010. Hill, who is facing a one-game suspension for off-the-field issues, will have a base salary of $2.125 million for this season according to the NFL Players Association web site. Jose Bautista has hit his major league-leading 43rd homer during the Toronto Blue Jays’ 10-run sixth inning against the Tampa Bay Rays. Bautista’s three-run drive Tuesday night off reliever Lance Cormier capped the outburst and put the Blue Jays up 11-3. Aaron Hill had a two-run shot against Cormier.

Derek Anderson will start at quarterback again for Arizona when the Cardinals play Washington on Thursday night in their final preseason game. Coach Ken Whisenhunt said he will use the same playing order as he did in last Saturday’s 14-9 win at Chicago. That means Matt Leinart will come in to replace Anderson at some point.

Right fielder Jay Bruce was a late scratch from the Cincinnati Reds’ lineup because of pain in his right side. Washington Nationals rookie ace Stephen Strasburg will have Tommy John surgery on Friday to rebuild his injured right elbow, an operation that is expected to sideline him for 12 to 18 months. The ligament replacement surgery will be in Los Angeles and performed by Dr. Lewis Yocum, with Nationals team doctor Dr.
