Ned Yost has been through this before. Yost helped turn the Milwaukee Brewers from a perennial loser into a playoff team, and now will have the chance to do the same with the Royals. The ailing franchise gave him a two-year contract extension Saturday that will keep him in Kansas City through 2012. Goalie Antti Niemi has been awarded a $2.75 million salary for next season, an arbitrator’s decision that could force the Stanley Cup champion Blackhawks to make another tough decision about their roster. Goalie Antti Niemi has been awarded a $2.75 million salary for next season after helping the Chicago Blackhawks win the Stanley Cup in June. The arbitrator’s decision could force the Blackhawks to make some tough decisions in order to stay under the NHL’s $59.4 million salary cap. Niemi earned $826,875 last season as a rookie.

The Atlanta Braves made a five-player deal Saturday to upgrade their outfield and an already formidable bullpen, acquiring Rick Ankiel and right-hander Kyle Farnsworth from Kansas City for three players. The NL East leaders are trying to fend off a charge by second-place Philadelphia, which had cut a seven-game deficit to 3 1/2 entering play on Saturday.

The New York Yankees acquired pitcher Kerry Wood from the Cleveland Indians on Saturday, the third deal in less than 24 hours for the World Series champions as they beefed up for the stretch run. Wood, a hard-throwing, 33-year-old righty, gives the Yankees another setup option alongside Joba Chamberlain for closer Mariano Rivera.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers agreed to terms on a five-year contract with first-round draft pick Gerald McCoy and also reached a six-year deal with restricted free agent left tackle Donald Penn on the opening day of training camp. The Boston Red Sox have designated outfielder Jeremy Hermida for assignment. Outfielder Ryan Kalish was called up from Triple-A Pawtucket to replace him on the roster. Hermida had originally been listed in the starting lineup for Saturday’s game against the Detroit Tigers, which was scheduled for 4:10 p.m.

The Detroit Lions have opened training camp without Ndamukong Suh. The Lions practiced Saturday afternoon while team officials and Suh’s agents, Eugene Parker and Roosevelt Barnes, worked on reaching a contract agreement. “I just got off the phone with those guys a minute ago,” Lions president Tom Lewand said soon after practice started.

A person familiar with the negotiations tells The Associated Press that the New York Yankees are close to acquiring pitcher Kerry Wood from the Cleveland Indians. The Yankees likely would send Cleveland a player to be named, the person said, speaking Saturday on condition of anonymity because the deal had not been finalized.

Sharks re-sign Setoguchi to 1-year deal (AP)

The San Jose Sharks have re-signed restricted free agent forward Devin Setoguchi to a one-year contract. The team announced the deal with the 23-year-old Setoguchi on Saturday. Setoguchi was tied for fourth on the team with 20 goals last season. He had 36 points in 70 games while playing mostly on the second line.

Left-hander Ted Lilly was traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers along with infielder Ryan Theriot on Saturday for infielder Blake DeWitt and minor league right-handers Kyle Smit and Brett Wallach. Los Angeles also received cash to cover part of what remains in Lilly’s $12 million salary. Third in the NL West, the Dodgers already acquired center fielder and leadoff man Scott Podsednik from Kansas…

Roof repair begins at Cardinals’ stadium (AP)

Crews are set to begin fixing the roof of the Arizona Cardinals’ stadium. A storm Thursday caused a piece of the University of Phoenix Stadium’s silver outer shell to come off and tear the fabric that’s part of the stadium’s retractable roof, leaving a 1,500-square-foot hole surrounded by several smaller rips.
