Joe Johnson’s agent says the four-time All-Star is meeting with the Atlanta Hawks at the start of the free-agent negotiating period. The Hawks are expected to do their best to keep Johnson, a free agent, by offering their top scorer a maximum contract in Thursday’s early morning meeting in Los Angeles.

Matt Kemp homered and drove in three runs, Vicente Padilla won his 100th game, and the Los Angeles Dodgers completed a three-game sweep of the San Francisco Giants with an 8-2 win Wednesday. Rafael Furcal had four hits, including a home run, and drove in two for the Dodgers, who earned a sweep in San Francisco for the first time in three years.

B.J. Upton was out of Tampa Bay’s starting lineup again Wednesday night against the Boston Red Sox, this time because of a sore right quadriceps. Upton didn’t want to talk about the injury when he walked to the trainer’s room before the game. “Yesterday, in the game, he was a little sore afterwards,” Rays manager Joe Maddon said.

The Flyers have signed goalie Michael Leighton to a two-year deal, keeping the playoff hero away from NHL free agency. Leighton stepped up during the postseason and helped the Flyers make a surprise run to the Stanley Cup finals. He went 8-3 with a 2.56 goals-against average in 14 playoffs games and set a team playoff record with three shutouts as Philadelphia won its first Eastern Conference…

Boston Celtics coach Doc Rivers will return for another season, staying with the team he led to the NBA finals twice in three years for a run at another championship. “Doc is a fantastic coach and leader and I am thrilled he is coming back for the upcoming season,” Celtics co-owner Steve Pagliuca said Wednesday in an e-mail to The Associated Press.

Wandy Rodriguez pitched seven solid innings and executed a perfect suicide squeeze bunt to snap a tie in the sixth inning to lead the Houston Astros to a 5-1 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers on Wednesday. Chris Johnson had his second four-hit game in six days for the Astros, including a two-run double in the seventh that made it 4-1.
